San Quentin 2: Death Row - Slot Overview
How many creative teams do you think have sat in front of a whiteboard, spitballing ideas and thought building a slot around a maximum security prison would be a swell idea? Not many, probably. Leave it to software provider Nolimit City then to not only take up the challenge but also drop a slot that would go on to seriously disrupt the online gambling landscape from that point on. San Quentin xWays was an absolute monster of a prison slot armed with a fine set of features backed by eye-opening winning potential and accompanied by a unique cast of characters. San Quentin 2: Death Row does all this and more in a raging beast of a sequel.
San Quentin xWays introduced us to five inmates named Beefy Dick, Loco Luis, Heinrich 3rd, Biker Bill, and Crazy Joe, who are back for part two, in older forms. Well, they probably never left, being incarcerated and all. The barbed wire fences and ominous guard towers in the background must be doing a good job of keeping baddies off the streets. The follow up has pushed the gaming grid, so users now get a 5-reel, 4-row matrix with 1,024 ways to win, which can be expanded up to 6 high, depending on what the Enhancer Reels at the top and bottom of the main grid display. It all looks and feels familiar yet different at the same time, like downsizing to a new office but continuing to work with the same bunch of people or something like that.

Statistically, San Quentin 2: Death Row is rated 12 on the volatility scale, which has to be first. We're used to seeing 10s, which Nolimit City describes as 'Extreme' in layman's terms, so brace for this because a 12 is labelled as 'Insane'. That should send a shiver of dread running down the spine, knowing the studio's reputation for designing savage slots. The default RTP tops out at 96.13%, and bets range from 20 c to $/€100.
Beefy Dick, Loco Luis, Heinrich 3rd, Biker Bill, and Crazy Joe appear on the higher paying symbols, while the lows are an empty toilet roll, gloves, dice, a comb, and pink bars of soap. Winning combinations of 5 matching high pays award 1.2 to 2 times the bet, dropping to 0.2x to 1x for the low pays. Wild symbols, when present on the reels, substitute for all paying symbols.
San Quentin 2: Death Row - Slot Features

Wander the corridors of San Quentin 2 Death Row, and visitors bump into such features as Enhancer Cells, Razor Splits, xWays symbols, Split Wilds, Green Mile Spins, and a heap of feature buys.
Enhancer Cells, Scatters & Split Wilds
At the top and bottom of the grid are 2 rows of locked Enhancer Cells. When an Enhancer Cell triggers to open, it reveals a high pay symbol, a wild, Razor Split, or an xWays symbol. Razor Split symbols split all symbols on that regular reel, doubling them. If Razor Splits land above and below the same reel, symbols are split twice. If a Razor Split splits a scatter symbol, then the scatter symbol transforms into a wild and splits its row. All xWays symbols reveal the same regular pay symbol, 5 high stacked. When xWays appear on the same reel, the entire reel is covered in 10 single wilds.
Moreover, landing 1 or 2 scatters in the main game transforms them into wilds and opens the Enhancer Cells on their reels. Also, Split Wilds may land on any reel. Split Wilds split all regular pay symbols on the same reel, but they do not split themselves. Also,
Green Mile Spins
Hitting 3, 4, or 5 scatter symbols triggers 8 Green Mile Spins with 1, 2, or 3 starting Jumping Wilds. Before Green Mile Spins begin, players can collect to start the round or gamble. Successful gambles award an extra Jumping Wild. Unsuccessful gamblers lose 5 free spins. If reaching 5 Jumping Wilds, players can risk losing 5 free spins to attempt getting the Max Win. Next, a single spin occurs to determine which high pay symbol will receive a multiplier for the free spins feature and its value.
The number of Jumping Wilds determines the number of reels with active Enhancer Cells.
- 1 Jumping Wild gets 3 reels with active Enhancer Cells.
- 2 Jumping Wilds gets 4 reels with active Enhancer Cells.
- 3, 4, or 5 Jumping Wilds gets 5 reels with active Enhancer Cells.
The 4th and 5th Jumping Wilds also start with an x2 multiplier on them. When Green Mile Spins begin, the reels with active Enhancer Cells are randomly picked and remain active throughout the whole round. Landing a scatter symbol on a reel with closed Enhancer Cells opens them on its reel, transforming the scatter into a Jumping Wild. Hitting 2-5 scatter symbols awards +3-6 free spins, respectively.

Jumping Wilds
Jumping Wilds jump to a random position on the regular reels on each spin. When a Jumping Wild lands on a reel with a Razor Split enhancer, it doubles its multiplier, which it retains for the rest of the round. It also doubles all positions on the same row. Jumping Wilds on rows affected by a split Jumping Wild also doubles its multiplier for the rest of the round. Jumping Wild multipliers count as the number of wilds in that position.
Nolimit Bonus Buy
These options are available at the Nolimit Bonus Buy: Green Mile Spins with 1 Jumping Wild - 100x the bet, Green Mile Spins with 2 Jumping Wilds - 500x the bet, Green Mile Spins with 3 Jumping Wild - 2,500x the bet, and Lucky Draw (40%/40%/20%) - 580x the bet.
Nolimit Booster
Another way of approaching San Quentin 2 Death Row is by activating the Nolimit Boosters: Nolimit Booster 1 - 2x the bet to guarantee a scatter symbol or Nolimit Booster 2 - 45x the bet to guarantee 2 scatter symbols.

San Quentin 2: Death Row - Slot Verdict
Picture a cartoon character walking along the street minding their own business before an anvil or a piano randomly falls from the sky on them, causing tweeting birds to fly in circles around their head. That's kind of how it felt when Nolimit City dropped the first San Quentin xWays slot. Released at the start of 2021, it threw down an enormously challenging gauntlet for players and competitor developers alike. The 150,000x max win was enormous (which one of our members was first to hit!), bonus buys were enormous, everything about it was enormous. It was like finding out on the first day in the clink that you're sharing a tiny cell with Beefy Dick, and there's only one bed.
San Quentin 2: Death Row is, as one might expect, an even bigger prospect. The game's max win has ballooned to 200,000x, bonus buys are chunkier, and there are even more ways of putting your butt on the line. Since San Quentin xWays, Nolimit City, like some trickster provider, has devised ever more fiendish ways to goad gamblers into having a punt. What we're talking about here are things like Skate or Die's Crasher Game, and San Quentin 2: Death Row tempts players with the chance to win extra Jumping Wilds (or lose free spins). Since Jumping Wilds are such a critical component, and having 5 bounce about the place is quite an exciting thought, risking free spins for more of them is quite alluring. Maybe try the gamble out in demo before taking the plunge IRL because winning extra Jumping Wilds could be an excruciating task.
Despite the new bits, San Quentin 2: Death Row is in many ways quite similar to the original game at its core, though it lacked the same baseball bat-to-the-face impact (and the humorous win animations) of the first. Arguably, there are no outrageously brilliant new innovations here that were not available when Loco Luis and boys first showed up on gamblers' doorsteps, and links to Punk Rocker 2 exist, as well. As such, demanding gamblers may be warming up those accusatory fingers for a good old wag in Nolimit City's direction. Not unjustifiably so from a certain point of view. But San Quentin 2: Death Row also fulfils the brief of being a meatier sequel, so it shouldn't be too much of a stretch for players who were rocked by the original slot to be equally, if not more, rocked by San Quentin 2: Death Row, provided they aren't savaged by unbridled ferocity.
While it struggles to match the jaw-dropping punch of its predecessor, San Quentin 2: Death Row still delivers a brutal, high-stakes experience that will keep adrenaline junkies and seasoned gamblers on the edge of their seat.
