Hacksaw Gaming partner NowNow Gaming heads into familiar Day of the Dead territory with Skull Fiesta, but instead of relying on sticky wilds or hold-and-win mechanics, the studio builds the entire game around its RIP Fortune Meter. It's the only feature that really separates Skull Fiesta from the dozens of other Mexican-themed slots on the market, and while the idea has some merit, it isn't quite enough to elevate the game beyond being an average release.
The RIP Fortune Meter sits alongside the reels and gradually comes to life whenever RIP symbols appear. Each activation lights up positions on the meter, converting matching symbols into cash prizes worth between 1x and 100x the bet. Once the values have been revealed, the RIP symbol applies an additional modifier. Coins may be duplicated, upgraded with multipliers, regenerated with fresh values, or affected by several modifiers at once, giving the feature a degree of unpredictability that keeps individual triggers interesting.
Free spins revolve around expanding that same mechanic rather than introducing something completely different. Three or more scatters award ten spins and activate several RIP positions immediately. From there, every new RIP symbol permanently expands the Fortune Meter while also adding two extra free spins, making longer bonus rounds noticeably stronger than shorter ones. Instead of resetting after each spin, the meter gradually becomes more powerful, creating a satisfying sense of progression if enough RIP symbols appear.
Unlike many recent releases from smaller studios, Skull Fiesta doesn't overwhelm players with endless side mechanics. The gameplay remains fairly easy to follow, and the Fortune Meter does a decent job of carrying the experience from the first spin through to the bonus round. Unfortunately, the surrounding package feels less impressive. The Day of the Dead theme has become one of the most overused settings in modern slots, and Skull Fiesta doesn't do much visually to distinguish itself from countless similar releases. The RTP of 96.26% is perfectly acceptable, but the gameplay can be inconsistent, with many RIP feature activations producing returns that struggle to justify the anticipation built around them.
Skull Fiesta isn't a bad slot by any means. The Fortune Meter provides a more engaging hook than standard hold-and-win mechanics, and the progressive bonus structure gives players something to build towards. Even so, the overall experience never quite escapes the feeling that you've seen most of it before. It's a competent release with one genuinely interesting idea, but probably not one that will remain in many players' regular rotation for long.
